After years of studying the world’s most resilient companies, I’ve come to a simple conclusion: Only Invest in Dominance.

If you want to build true wealth, follow this hierarchy:

• First Choice: Invest in Monopoly. Total control.

• Second Choice: Invest in Duopoly. Shared dominance.

• Last Resort: Invest in Oligopoly. Group stability.

Anything else is just a fight for crumbs.

I focus on exceptional businesses, incentives, and time.

This newsletter is built on a simple belief:

Long-term wealth comes from owning a small number of exceptional businesses for a long time, when expectations are still reasonable.

Research from Hendrik Bessembinder shows 4% of listed companies drive the market’s net wealth creation.

Below is the exact checklist I use to identify outstanding businesses.

1) Understand the company’s DNA

Foundation is everything.

Before I look at valuation, forecasts, or narratives, I ask:

What is this business truly optimised for?

A company’s early DNA tends to persist:

• leadership quality

• culture (Empower operators and remove bureaucracy)

• decision-making style

• customer obsession

• willingness to reinvest for the long term

Amazon is a great example.
Bezos built the company around long-term thinking, customer obsession, and relentless reinvestment.

That DNA survived multiple market cycles and became a compounding machine.

Investor test:
Read shareholder letters, study early decisions, and look for consistent long-term behaviour.

2) Is this a business people use every day?

Daily-use businesses are hard to displace.

When conditions tighten, optional products disappear.
But everyday demand remains.

Think:

• Amazon

• Google

• Apple

• Walmart

• Coca-Cola

Many of the biggest wealth creators sit at the centre of the economy not at the edge.

Investor test:
Ask: If the economy weakens, do customers reduce usage or do they keep using it anyway?

3) Is management exceptional and aligned?

Only invest when leaders think like owners.

That means:

• meaningful equity ownership

• long-term incentives

• rational decision-making

• willingness to sacrifice short-term profit for long term gain

• Embrace change and adopt early

Avoid businesses managed for quarterly earnings.

Favor founder-led, owner-operator cultures, where accountability is built in.

Warren Buffett says he looks for three traits in people:

• Integrity

• Energy

• Intelligence

Miss one, and problems start.

• Smart + hardworking but not honest → that’s how fraud happens.

• Honest + smart but low energy → competitors eventually pass you.

• Honest + hardworking but not adaptable → the company confidently heads the wrong way.

But when someone has all three, even if they don’t seem impressive on paper, they usually find a way to succeed, maybe not fast, but eventually.

Example:
Wise plc founder-CEO Kristo Käärmann owns 18% (£2B) of the company and takes no bonus or LTIP.

That’s real alignment:
his wealth compounds only if shareholders win.

Investor test:
Read the proxy statement. Look at insider ownership and how executives get paid.

4) Does the business create a win-win for customers?

Exceptional companies don’t extract value from customers, they compound by creating loyalty.

The best businesses build a virtuous cycle:

Customer-first economics → trust → organic growth → scale → better pricing/service → even more loyalty

Costco is the classic example:

Get bigger → get cheaper → get stronger.

Investor test:
Look for businesses that deliberately pass some benefits back to customers rather than maximising margin in the short term.

5) Does the business have a real competitive advantage (moat)?

A real moat is a durable advantage that persists even under attack.

It often comes from:

• network effects

• switching costs

• brand + trust

• scale economics

• distribution dominance

• Impossible-to-rebuild infrastructure

A strong moat means competitors can’t easily replicate the model even if they copy the product.

Investor test:
Ask: What stops a well-funded competitor from taking this business in 5 years?

6) Is the business allocating capital with discipline?

Capital allocation is one of the most underappreciated drivers of compounding.

Even a great business can destroy returns if management misallocates cash.

Look for leaders who:

• reinvest at high ROIC

• make rational acquisitions

• buy back shares at attractive prices

• avoid ego-driven empire-building

Example:
Games Workshop has historically displayed exceptional economics and allocation discipline, producing extremely high returns on capital.

Investor test:
Study 5–10 years of reinvestment + ROIC trend.

7) Is there a long runway for growth?

Great businesses need both:

1. high returns on capital

2. somewhere to reinvest for years

Ask:

• is the market expanding?

• are there secular tailwinds?

• can the company expand into adjacent categories/geographies?

Example: Google’s reinvestment runway

• Search + YouTube: cash engine

• Cloud: scale play

• Gemini AI: embedded across products

• Waymo: real world autonomy

• TPU chips: infrastructure leverage

• Other bets

Core question:
Is the company positioned to own the next decade?

8) Has the company created shareholder value and will it continue?

Past compounding doesn’t guarantee future compounding, but it’s a powerful signal.

Look for evidence of:

• execution quality over cycles

• adaptability during disruption

• durability during downturns

Example: MercadoLibre
It’s becoming Latin America’s digital backbone:
e-commerce + payments + logistics + credit.

Still early:
only 10% of retail is online in many LATAM markets.

This is the kind of ecosystem compounding that creates extraordinary shareholder value.

9) Can the business scale without heavy capital reinvestment?

The best compounders can grow profits without absorbing massive incremental capital.

That means:

• high incremental margins

• light balance sheet

• high FCF conversion

• scalable model

Old-school giants scale by building heavy assets.

Modern compounders scale with:

• software

• networks

• ecosystems

• distribution

Example: Arista Networks
Outsourced manufacturing, lightweight balance sheet, focus on software + growth.

Investor test:
Watch incremental returns: does growth require huge capex to grow?

10) Does valuation offer a margin of safety?

Even the best business can be a bad investment at the wrong price.

I try to find a cheap valuations where downside is protected and upside is underappreciated.

For example, a situations where a strong core business funds a new business with much larger upside.

Or hidden assets — undervalued land, depreciated equipment.

Before buying, I ask:

• is the price fair vs future earnings and cash flows?

• am I compensated for risk?

• what could go wrong?

• am I buying value — or buying a story?

Example: PayPal
Cheap relative to history doesn’t automatically mean undervalued.

Sometimes low valuation reflects real structural issues.

A discount only matters if the business quality remains intact.

11) Is the balance sheet built to survive?

A fragile balance sheet turns a great business into a potential disaster.

Avoid:

• heavy leverage

• refinancing dependence

• binary outcomes

Example Oracle:

Oracle has $127B in debt ($25B due within 3 years) and is free cash flow negative (about –$13B over the last 12 months).

It’s also not expected to turn FCF positive until 2028.

This is a fragile balance sheet that can not withstand future surprise events.

Arista Networks, which I’ve written about before, has no debt and over $10B in net cash.

That fortress balance sheet gives it the strength to survive any downturn.

12) Does the business outpace competitors in real earnings power?

Focus on real economics, not headline EPS.

Track:

• operating cash flow

• free cash flow after maintenance capex

• consistency of reinvestment returns

Beware accounting profits with weak cash conversion.

13) Are profit margins structurally attractive?

Look for businesses that:

• defend pricing

• expand margins through scale

• convert profits into cash

High profitability tends to correlate with survivability.

Example: Adobe
Historically strong cash conversion and durable economics (even while facing new pressures).

14) Is executive pay aligned with long-term compounding?

Most incentive structures quietly destroy shareholder value.

The best incentives reward:

• ROIC

• long-term value creation

• durable execution

Not:

• short-term EPS games

• revenue-at-any-cost behaviour

Wise is again a good example: ownership is the incentive.

15) What are the main risks the business faces?

You must identify “hidden cracks,” substitution risks, and high barrier entry to ensure the business reaches its 20-year destination.

Disruption, regulatory, geographic exposure, competitive threats, concentration, and cyclical risk.

• Risk from AI or tech disruption?

• Regulatory or political overhang?

• Revenue concentration or platform risk?

Ignoring risk doesn’t make it disappear, it just makes it surprise you later, usually at the worst possible time.

The ultimate filter: opportunity cost

The goal isn’t to over-diversify, it’s to concentrate in a few truly exceptional businesses.

If you had a blank piece of paper today…

Would the business in question be one of the 20 greatest stocks in the world based on everything you now know?

If your answer is not a resounding “Yes”, you are holding dead capital and must move on to the next opportunity immediately.

Because there is always opportunity cost if the money is not allocated in your high convection business.

Summary:

The market is full of good companies, but real wealth is created by owning the rare few exceptional that compound for decades.

Returns are concentrated: a small group of winners drives most gains, while the rest barely beat cash.

That’s why investing isn’t about comfort diversification ,it’s about finding businesses with great foundations:

I look for companies with:

1. Founder/owner alignment (skin in the game)

2. A structural advantage (cost, network effects, switching costs, scale)

3. Real profitability (high margins + strong cash generation)

4. Capital-light and scalability (growth without huge reinvestment)

5. A long runway (large market, early penetration)

6. Reasonable valuation (expectations reset)
